Dunston Staiths

The North Eastern Railway Company opened Dunston Staiths in 1893 to meet the growing demand to export coal. Coal from mines in County Durham was loaded onto ships from the staiths on the River Tyne at Dunston. The staiths are believed to be the largest timber structure in Europe.
